By now you have probably heard about ELD (Electronic Logging Devices) and AOBRD (Automatic on-board recording device). In case you have been wondering what’s the difference and what do you need to be compliant with the ELD mandate starting from December 18, 2017, we are here to help.
ELD or AOBRD: what’s the difference?
AOBRD is the ‘grandfather’ of ELD. It’s a solution dating from the 1980s capable of recording driver’s duty status information accurately and automatically. At a minimum, the device must record engine use, road speed, miles driven, the date, and time of day. The AOBRD is a simpler alternative to an ELD.
AOBRD |
ELD |
Gets data from the vehicle (method not specified) | Gets data from the vehicle (EMD for My 2000 or newer) |
Manual or automatic locations for duty changes | Automatic data capture which includes location for duty changes |
No location fixes when operating | Data capture once per hour in operation |
No grid-graph requirement | Grid-graph requirement |
No required ‘prompts’ | Driver prompted for entries |
The only ‘default’ required is driving | Default to driving and on-duty when stopping driving |
Display only. Officer must request records from carrier | Device must provide records to officers during inspection |
Is this an ELD or an AOBRD Mandate?
According to FMCSA, for fleets running with paper logs today, they have until December 18, 2017 to implement electronic logs, either through an Automatic Onboard Recording Device (AOBRD) or ELD. If a fleet opts for an AOBRD solution (or already has one in place today), they will have until December 16, 2019 to make the switch to ELDs. Thus, this is the first phase of the ELD mandate and in fact equals an AOBRD mandate.
